Carifiesta 2019: On the way back

On Saturday, July 6, the streets of downtown Montreal turned into a spectacle of revelry and music as the annual Carifiesta wound its way from Fort to Bleury streets under the burning mid-summer sunshine. The parade, just a shadow of its former self with just handful of bands and a scattering of masqueraders in costumes is said to be on a rebuilding course. But what it lacked in artistry was over-compensated for by the energy of the revelers and the enthusiasm of the thousands of Montrealers who turned out to enjoy the abundance of Caribbean flavors on display. Carifiesta 2018

Contact Staff It took a little over two hours or so for Carifiesta 2018 to make its way from Guy Street to a block or so from its intended end-point on Bleury Street before the police and cleanup crews ended the parade and shooed people away from downtown Montreal. Again, as it has been for the past several years, the showcase of Black and Caribbean music and culture didn’t have much to show to the thousands of onlookers that lined Rene Levesque Street. About seven or eight music trucks, three representing the Haitian sector of the community, together with …

Carifiesta Color and Excitement

Contact Staff Carifiesta has always been able to provide Montreal with its fair share of color and excitement. And it was in full glow on Saturday, July 8, as hundreds of masqueraders and revelers took over St. Catherine Street between Fort and Philip Square for another of the annual ritual of show and music. In the end the parade, with its full compliment of a dozen or so floats, was depleted by the rain, which shut down many generators and forced groups to form on-the-spot partnerships with each other to share music. Roots Cultural Club, Carnival Vibration and Carnival Freaks …

Carifiesta 2016: Revelers took over St. Catherine Street

After a brief rain delay on the morning of July 2, Carifiesta 2016  kicked off in a blaze of color and music from the corner of Fort Street  and made its way along St. Catherine Street to Phillips Square. In all, about 12 groups of varying sizes participated in a parade that was dominated by what is known in the Caribbean as Jab Jab mas. Two of the more populated bands had hundreds of high energy  Jabs bringing a special something to the parades. Also on the street this year were the usually spectacular Roots with their presentation of Tings …

Carifiesta Bands 2016

Jab Army ‘All you gotta do is play a wicked JAB’ According to The #JabArmy Battalion, the best way to enjoy the Montreal Carifiesta experience is to come play a wicked Jab. Experiencing Carifiesta 2015

At the end of the day, on Saturday, July 4, the Carifiesta Parade delivered what was expected of it… lots of music, massive crowds and seemingly mindless indulgences. As usual, so many in the community try to put perspective or make sense of what has become, really, an exercise in hedonism for some and the search for a good time for others. The thing can only be defined by the scarcity of splendor and predominance of Jab Jab. And the big discussion to come will be about those who find fun in spraying kerosene in the air and how long …
